Code-Breakers Spell it by Sound
This is a new kind of spelling book, which is organised by sound and then grouped under specific ways of representing that sound, e.g. the sound /e/ features the spellings e as in 'bed' and ea as in 'head'. The book also features 'exceptions' or words which do not fit a spelling pattern, such as 'said' and 'friend'. In Code-Breakers Year 2, we suggest that children learn a weekly list of spellings matched to the phoneme-to-grapheme correspondences taught that week and these can be easily taken from the book. This book is an ideal source of spellings for children to learn in years 2-6. It forms a useful part of the Code-Breakers phonics programme.
