NEW FAST-TRACK Code-Breakers
NEW FAST-TRACK 4-term version available now

Many teachers and schools will already be familiar with Code-Breakers, the phonics programme developed and used in the Hamilton schools which preserves the notion of role-play and writing to an audience whilst at the same time providing a systematic and structured programme of phoneme-to-grapheme daily sessions.
NEW FAST-TRACK Code-Breakers was developed following an action-research project funded by The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation which involved 80 schools around the country. The results of this project have been summarised in a Report available through the Hamilton Trust website.

This 4-term version provides an alternative FAST-TRACK based on entirely the same principles. We still provide daily sessions, children still encounter each phoneme-to-grapheme correspondence in a structured and systematic order, and, best of all, they still listen to anecdotes and stories by the characters, and therefore writing is with a purpose and to a specified audience.
Code-Breakers speeds up the delivery of the original highly successful programme so that it is possible to complete the phonics required within four terms rather than seven/eight terms. There is some evidence from Scotland and England that speeding up the delivery of a structured phonics programme actually helps children to learn it not only faster but better. In addition, the NEW FAST-TRACK Code-Breakers provides revision activities containing more phonemic manipulation, and also tailored spelling lists for each session.
We must stress however, that the original 7-term programme will remain entirely appropriate for many children and as such, can and should still be used. The NEW version is an alternative, NOT a replacement.
