New - Mixed Yr2/3 Group Readers

Brand new beautifully illustrated Group Reader books have just been added to our website!

'Being Free' and 'Three Wise Men and a Star' have just been written to accompany the plans from the Hamilton Trust website for the Mixed Yr2/3 Autumn plans (set B).
Frosty Rhymes will also be added soon.

 

Numeracy Passports

Hamilton's Numeracy and First Number Passports are all about improving memorisation and fluency in key skills. Each passport contains lists of basic facts and fundamental skills that need to be secure for the teaching and learning of the new maths curriculum to run smoothly.

Numeracy and First Number Passports

The First Number Passports are designed for Reception class children and are completed in one year. The Numeracy Passports take children right the way from Year 1 through to Year 6.

Themes

The passports look and feel like real passports. The First Number facts/skills progress children through a journey to the four countries of the United Kingdom, while the Numeracy Passports progress through the seven continents to take children around the whole world. The appealing context of a journey helps reinforce the satisfaction of moving forward. When a child has completed a country or continent, the date is entered on the first page. There is space for children’s photographs at the back to make the passports really special to them. The quality of these passports is intended to raise the status of learning these important skills.

Home-school link

The passports are designed to be sent home so that parents/carers can see which facts/skills children are practising, and help with them.

Marking progress

There are spaces for three ticks next to each target to indicate that the child has demonstrated this target. This may have been noted through observation by a teacher or teaching assistant, a test, and/or feedback from a parent/carer. If the child has been seen to have demonstrated this skill three times, the child has really got it!

There is a taster pack to give you a chance to see what the passports look and feel like. It includes one First Number and one Numeracy Passport as well as a tips sheet to give you ideas about how to use the passports to best effect. The passports come in packs of 10 or 30. The newest ones are 'Crocodile' for KS1 and 'Icarus' for KS2.

All the Group Readers are written into the Hamilton Trust website plans but also make nice short stories for when you have a few minutes to spare!

Our very own Professor Ruth Merttens is giving a talk at bett, ExCeL, London on Wednesday 20th January, 2016. Ruth’s presentation, ‘Mastery - where does it come from and how do we get it?’ takes place in the Primary Learn Live Theatre at 13.30pm.

In her talk, ‘Mastery - where does it come from and how do we get it?’ Professor Merttens will address some key questions:

  • What are the origins of this currently ubiquitous notion?
  • How do we achieve the required 'mastery of age-related targets' for all children?

Professor Merttens will recap the provenance of the concept of 'mastery' in educational psychology. She will then outline the five keys to success in enabling as many children as possible to master the new and challenging National Curriculum mathematics objectives. This is predominantly a pragmatic and practical session in which five pedagogical strategies for improving the teaching of mathematics will be described together with their relation to 'mastery'. The session is addressed to classroom teachers and maths co-ordinators, as well as those involved in senior management in primary schools. Read more on the bett website.

Hope you had a great summer - where does the time go!

Just to let you know, we are introducing sound files to accompany some of the Group Readers.
When you purchase a set of 6 Group Reader books you will be invited to download the MP3 file immediately - and a link to the file is also emailed through you to.

Once downloaded you can play it to your group or class alongside using the books we will send out to you.

Group Readers which have MP3 files attached are currently:
'Hickory Dickory Dock', 'The Mouse Frog and Hen', 'The Pobble who has no Toes' and also 'A Song of Toad'.

Books in the hands of children

At Hamilton Education, we believe passionately that children need and deserve lots of opportunities to handle books. A direct connection with texts will help children learn to read, and there’s no better way for children to form that connection than to hold and turn pages of physical books, especially when they each have their own copies of the same text to share with their friends.

Hamilton’s Group Readers are specially designed to engage children and to enable them to read together in a small group, with or without the teacher.  Each child has their own copy and the texts are graded so that teachers can select the right books to suit the level of different groups of children. They are illustrated with lively, expressive pictures that capture children’s attention and help them focus on the words in the story. The characters are larger than life, fun and memorable, and Boris the Bat and Sid the Lemur recur in stories at different levels so children can follow their ongoing adventures. The group readers are built in to the Hamilton English planning, to enable teachers to build guided reading sessions into their daily literacy provision. 

We produce these books so as to make them accessible to all schools. We sell them as cheaply as we can in sets of 6, so that every child can read along with a small group of readers at a similar level. We have group readers across all genres, including non-fiction, diaries, letters, traditional stories, fantasy and poetry.  Of course, if you are a Hamilton subscriber, you can also download these texts and print them yourselves.

I hope you and your pupils enjoy reading them as much as we enjoy writing them!
