Code-Breakers starts by helping children recognise individual sounds in words they say and hear, and then systematically teaches recognition of the graphemes that match those sounds. The four New Code-Breakers books take 40 weeks to complete, making it possible for children to start this phonics programme in the Summer term of Reception and finish by the end of Year 1. Each book includes detailed session plans, sample revision sessions, extra practice and helpful lists of phonemes, words and spellings.

Code Breakers is a synthetic phonics programme that teaches phoneme-to-grapheme correspondences (PGCs) in a systematic, child-friendly fashion. It covers all the pre-requisite skills for reading – sequencing, sound identification, reproduction and discrimination –  in a structured scheme of word-level work. The programme is based on extensive research on the frequency of PGCs, which ensures that these are taught in the order that children are most likely to meet them.

New Code-Breakers can be completed in four terms and is recommended for most schools in England, where there is pressure to reach a particular standard for the Phonics test at the end of Year 1. The original Code-Breakers takes a slower pace.
